What happens when I start?
Your first match will be at junior level, progression from there will depend on enjoyment, desire and ability to move to higher grades

What about training and the laws?
Training nights are held regularly throughout the season ( March to September)

Is there any on field assistance?
Referee coaches are available to assist and to provide advice and support on a practical level.

What if I am still at college?
The REO runs courses specifically aimed at college-aged referees. Contact your P E Department.

How far can I go?
There is a career path for referees just like players and coaches. Referees can elect to stay at a chosen level or attempt to reach the highest levels of club and representative rugby as an amateur or progress on to international rugby as a professional.

Are there any test?
Two NZRFU law tests are conducted in our region each year. Level 1 is the entry level exam and Level 2 is a more involved theory test. Neither test is compulsory, although all referees are encouraged to have a go.
