Pre-season

Our squad finished off the pre-season with an emphatic 54 – 33 victory over Wellington in an entertaining match in Seddon last Thursday.

2017 Makos Squad

The Tasman Makos coaches and management have named a squad of 28 players to contest the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup Premiership. The team is split between 16 forwards and 12 backs.

Farewell Marty Banks

We could always bank on Marty. Mako # 116, Marty Banks played 40 matches for Tasman since 2013, leading the Makos backline with guile while scoring a record 643 points at first five-eighth. A fan favourite, Marty is clearly the best number 10 to play for Tasman and was selected to the Makos Team of the Decade last year.

Final win for Canterbury

Let’s start by acknowledging how good Canterbury played in the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership Final. They were terrific, as they were all season losing just 2 games in 12. That said, 2017 has been another excellent season for Tasman, with the team punching above its weight to make a second Premiership final in 3 seasons.

Farewell Kieron Fonotia

Kieron Fonotia (Mako # 90) has played 64 matches for Tasman since 2011, scoring 11 tries as an outstanding outside centre.

Makos chomp on Bulls

Our mighty Makos were unrelenting in overcoming an outstanding Taranaki opponent, 41 -29 at Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth in Sunday afternoon’s Mitre 10 Cup Premiership semi-final.

Meet Ethan Blackadder

Originally selected to the Makos squad as a wider training member, 21 year old Ethan Blackadder has taken his opportunity as an injury cover replacement in round 4 against Otago to become a big part of the Tasman match day line-up, playing the last 7 matches in the backrow.

Makos in the semi-final this Sunday!

Sunday’s 56 – 0 victory over Southland was the team’s largest ever winning margin, it secured third spot on the Premiership table and set up a semi-final match with Taranaki next Sunday in New Plymouth.The semi-final is set for Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth on Sunday with kick off at 4.35pm.

Meet Shannon Frizell

Shannon is a young man from Tonga who came to play club rugby for Marist and try and break into the Makos. His club form earned him that selection for 2016 and he has made every post a winner, appearing in all matches played to date.
