Riwaka a class above the rest

Nelson invaders Riwaka proved too big, too strong and too fast for the local competition, running away with the inaugural Cornerstone Bar and Super Liquor Rugby Tens tournament at Lansdowne Park yesterday.
In a series of impressive performances Riwaka was a class above the other 10 teams in the competition, winning most matches comfortably including a 32-0 victory over Awatere in the final.
The Nelson club combined fleet-footed backs and hard-running forwards around key playmaker Derek Arnold and were seldom challenged.
Awatere were surprise finalists, rallying in the final minute to beat Tasman Maori 14-12 through a fine individual try from hooker Junior Faifua.
While Riwaka provided plenty of flashy play Awatere generally worked hard to graft out their wins led by strong performances from Paul Murphy and Lenny Basham in the forwards.
In the backs, halfbacks Sam Clouston and Nick Goddard were consistently busy while winger Nick Allen touched down in a number of games.
Tasman Maori were consistently strong performers throughout the day and must have been disappointed not to have had a crack at Riwaka in the final.
Maia King and Dave Fotu were constant threats in a dangerous backline while Riley Luke slotted in well in the front row.
Waitohi also advanced to the semifinals led by the hard-hitting defence of Les Ivamy before succumbing to Riwaka 31-12.
Marlborough Rugby Sub-Union development officer Joe Wheeler said the day proved to be a big success with teams enjoying the pre-season hit-out.
"There was a really good atmosphere. Six marquees, some beer tents and a barbecue. Everyone really enjoyed themselves."
