The spoils of a successful Tasman Maori rugby season were on display in Nelson at the weekend.
All four of the country's leading trophies for Maori rugby - the Prince of Wales Cup, the George Nepia Memorial Shield, the Manny McDonald Challenge Cup and the Tirikatene Shield - and the local players who helped to secure them - assembled at the Marist Rugby Club on Saturday.
Tere Wycliff, Gavin Briggs, Shane Christie and James Foster were part of the senior Te Waipounamu (Southern Districts) team, coached by Tasman Makos Maori coach Wayne Abbott of Blenheim, that beat Te Hiku O Te Ika (Northern Districts) 39-22 at Auckland's Eden Park to win the Prince of Wales Cup. The game was played as the curtainraiser to the Blues-Waratahs Super 14 match.
Te Tini a Maui (Central Districts) was the other regional team involved in the national competition.
Foster also joined Jimmy Giles and Laman Davies in the Te Waipounamu under-21 side that won the Manny McDonald Challenge Cup age-group trophy for all three regions.
Te Waipounamu was awarded the George Nepia Memorial Shield as the region with the most overall points following the men's, women's and under-21 competitions, while Tasman Makos Maori beat Canterbury Maori 22-19 to claim the Tirikatene Shield for South Island and Central region teams.
In other games, Tasman Maori lost 10-11 to the Marlborough representative team and beat Wellington Maori 19-11. The Tasman Maori Colts lost to the Canterbury Maori Colts 17-19.
