Marlborough under 18s put up a spirited showing in losing 15-29 to Canterbury Metro in their South Island tournament opener at Lansdowne Park on Saturday.
Canterbury led 17-10 at half-time, Tyler Hammond having scored a fine try for Marlborough.
Prop Hamish Cochrane crashed over for Marlborough's second try after half-time but Canterbury were just a little too skilled and well drilled for the gallant home team.
Marlborough coach Dave Pigou was pleased with his team's improvement from the previous week, especially the opening half hour.
He singled out Cochrane and Hammond for their standout games.
Number eight Amco Cassidy was also a big contributor but the backs were generally muddled. Pigou rated mid- fielder Matt Murphy as his best back.
Scorers: Canterbury Metro 29 Marlborough 15 (Tyler Hammond, Hamish Cochrane tries, Matt Murphy con, pen).
Meanwhile Marlborough under 16 were also beaten by Canterbury Metro in a South Island tournament opener at Lansdowne Park 17-32 but team manager Alex Warner rated it an improved performance.
Canterbury led 13-0 at half-time but Marlborough fought back strongly in the second half, being particularly impressive in the third quarter, closing to 17-18 at one stage.
Tyrone Elkington scored and converted, Daniel Hawkins touched down, Elkington converting and Elkington also landed a penalty.
Warner singled out Matt Dowling for his fine efforts at lineout time as well as front-rower Jonny Tiueti, Bradley Hide and Joe Vaatuitui. Ryan Schollum had a fine game at halfback.
Marlborough's next game in the South Island tournament is against Nelson Bays at Tahunanui Park next Saturday, a clash expected to be just as tough as the Canterbury game.
Scorers: Canterbury Metro 32 Marlborough 17 (Tyrone Elkington, Daniel Hawkins tries, Elkington 2 con, pen).
