Franks returns to All Blacks
01-Jun-2010

Marlborough Express - JOHN ALEXANDER
Tasman Makos prop Ben Franks found out the old-fashioned way that he'd made it back into the All Blacks.

He yesterday joined younger brother Owen in the squad announced to play upcoming tests against Ireland and Wales, realising his burning desire to get back into the team after injury ruled him out last year.

Franks is the first All Black selected while playing for the Makos, although he was originally picked in 2008 while playing for Canterbury.

Speaking from Christchurch yesterday, he said: "Owen and I were down cleaning our new gymnasium. I didn't know I had made the team until I got home. I listened with my partner Gemma to the team being announced on the radio, and that's how I found out."

Franks said he was thrilled to be back in the team, and equally pleased his brother had made it as well.

Ironically, it was Owen who took Ben's place when the latter succumbed to a foot injury last year. Ben had appeared set to play in the Tri-Nations, having made his All Black debut at the end of 2008 against Munster.

Ben Franks has played on both sides of the scrum for the Crusaders and the Makos, and said he had no preference.

"Both positions have things I like about them.

"Both are a challenge, especially changing from one side to another during a game. I changed sides this season for the Crusaders just about every game I played."

He admitted that it was frustrating watching others pass him in the pecking order during his recovery from injury, but the large screw a surgeon had inserted in his foot had done the trick.

Franks may have the chance to captain the Makos this year, providing he's available often enough with All Black commitments. He said his selection from the Makos was proof that players did not have to play for one of the so-called bigger unions to make it.

"The Makos have nearly beaten every team in the competition.

"There's so much talent up in Nelson and Marlborough, and I'm sure we'll get more in the All Blacks."
