Marlborough player suffers seriuos injury
12-Apr-2010

MARLBOROUGH EXPRESS
A serious head injury suffered by Awatere winger Josh McGuire marred Marlborough club rugby on Saturday.

McGuire had been on the field for less than two minutes against Moutere when he was felled by a legitimate tackle near the western touchline in the 15th minute of play.

His head appeared to hit the ground hard, knocking him unconscious.

A Wellington Hospital spokesman said this morning McGuire was in a serious condition in intensive care.

Awatere team officials immediately realised the seriousness of his injury and called an ambulance, which arrived about 25 minutes later.

Until the ambulance arrived, Awatere and Moutere support staff kept McGuire comfortable and made sure there were no sudden movements, in case he had a neck injury.

Two medics worked on him for about another 20 minutes before taking him to Wairau Hospital.

McGuire was still unconscious when the ambulance left.

The match was held up for about 45 minutes, because the injury occurred just inside the playing area.

McGuire had already played in the senior A curtainraiser. He was on the field as a temporary blood bin replacement, and the coaches were intending to take him off after the next break in play.
