The 2007 rugby season has surely proven to be a successful one for the Tasman Makos Maori sides. As members of the South Islands Te Waipounamu they won all four of the major trophies being competed for by New Zealand’s regional Maori sides- Te Waipounnamu, Te Tini a Maui and Te Hiku o Te Ika.

The Manny McDonald Challenge Cup:
This cup began in 1980 and was originally only contested by the South Island and Central Districts under 23 sides. This year the competition was extended to all three regions for the under 21 competition. Tasman had three of their Colts players selected to be a part of this team- Jimmy Giles, James Foster and Lamon Davies

The Prince of Wales Cup:
The Prince of Wales Cup- considered the Ranfurly Shield of Maori rugby- began in 1928 and is contested by the Senior Maori Mens teams in the three regions. Again three Tasman players were selected to be a part of this team- Terry Wycliff, Shane Christie and Gavin Briggs who was also selected as the teams vice captain. Also involved in this team from the Tasman Makos Maori side was both the head coach and trainer.

The Tirkatene Shield:
This shield was presented to the Horowhenua Maori Rugby Club as a tribute to the late Sir Eruere Tirikatene in recognition for his invaluable services to the Maori people. It was set in the original rules of competition for this trophy that only South Island Maori clubs were to compete for it but has since become the trophy for competition between the South Island and Central region teams. The Tasman Makos Maori team defeated Canterbury Maori 22-19 to claim this shield.

The George Nepia Memorial Shield:
This shield- originally presented in 1987 by the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union- is awarded to the Maori region with the most overall points following the men’s, women’s and under 21 competitions. As Te Waipounamu took out the previous three trophy titles they were to be the obvious winners of this accolade at the end of the season.
