The Tasman Makos were once again proud to be a part of the 2009 Air New Zealand Cup – New Zealand’s premier provincial rugby competition and are looking forward to the 2010 and future seasons ahead.
In 2006 the 14-team Air NZ Cup competition replaced the 12-team NPC as the premier rugby competition in New Zealand. The Tasman Makos were one of four new teams stepping up.
It was played in two pools which gave the Makos three home games in the first round. They also had one home game as part of the repecharge play.
After a comprehensive review of the new competition, the New Zealand Rugby Union made some vital changes for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. This new structure saw each team playing five home games in the 10 week round one competition. Another new feature was the regular Thursday night match.
At the completion of 2008 the NZRU held another review which resulted in the retention of a 14 team competition but with a new draw meaning each team will get to play all of the other teams in 2009 and 2010.
In 2011 and 2012 the NZRU look to return to the two pool format divided into the top seven and the bottom seven, known as the premiership and championship respectively.
